Custom gym app vs white-label: which should your gym choose?

An honest comparison of the two routes, including when a white-label app is genuinely the right call.

The two routes

A white-label gym app is a ready-made platform reskinned with your logo and colours, sold as a monthly subscription. A custom app is built from scratch for your gym, and you own it. Both can handle bookings, payments and memberships. The differences are in ownership, branding, fees and where you end up three years from now.

Where white-label wins

Speed and entry price. You can be live in days for a low monthly fee, with support handled by the platform. If your gym is brand new, cash is tight, and you just need bookings working this month, a white-label app is a perfectly rational starting point. There is no shame in it, and plenty of good gyms run on one.

Where white-label costs you

Three places. Fees: most platforms charge per member or per feature tier, so the better your gym does, the more you pay, forever. Branding: your app looks and behaves like every other gym on the same platform, down to the same screens and flows, with your logo swapped in. Ownership: you own none of it. If you leave the platform, the app, the reviews and often chunks of your member data stay behind. That switching cost is the quiet lock-in that keeps gyms paying long after they have outgrown the product.

Where custom wins

Everything compounds in your favour. You pay for the build once, plus a flat plan for updates, and the cost does not scale with your member count. The app is designed around how your gym actually runs, your programmes, your language, your brand, rather than the platform's idea of a generic gym. And you own the code, the App Store listing and the member relationship outright, so nobody can raise your fees or sunset a feature you rely on.

The honest decision rule

If you are pre-launch or under a few hundred members and cash-flow is the constraint, start white-label and revisit in a year. If you are established, growing, and the monthly platform bill keeps climbing while the app makes you look like everyone else, it is time to price up a custom build. Do the maths over three years, not three months, that is where the answer usually becomes obvious.
