How much does it cost to build a gym app in the UK?

The honest answer, what drives the price up or down, and how the maths compares with renting a white-label app.

The short answer

In the UK in 2026, a properly built custom gym app typically starts in the low thousands and climbs with scope. At Appro Digital, builds start from £3,500 for a focused native iOS app, from £5,000 for an app plus a web platform to run it, and from £10,000 for a fully managed setup. Larger agencies commonly quote five figures for comparable work, and big-agency builds can run far beyond that.

What actually drives the price

Four things move the number more than anything else. First, features: a timetable and booking flow is a smaller build than booking plus payments, memberships, workout delivery and community features. Second, whether you need a backend and admin portal, if staff need to manage classes, members and payments from a dashboard, you are building two products, not one. Third, integrations with whatever software your gym already runs. Fourth, design: custom UI designed around your brand takes longer than dropping a logo onto a template, and it is also the whole point of going custom.

The cost nobody puts on the pricing page

An app is not a one-off purchase. iOS updates land every year, bugs need fixing, and members expect improvements. Whatever route you take, budget for ongoing work, either as a monthly plan with your developer or as ad-hoc invoices. A build with no plan for maintenance is a build that quietly dies within a year or two.

Custom vs white-label: the real maths

White-label gym apps look cheap because the entry price is low. But most charge monthly fees that scale with your member count, keep ownership of the code, and make your app look like every other gym running the same platform. Over a few years, a growing gym can pay more in white-label fees than a custom build would have cost, and at the end of it they still own nothing. With a custom build you pay more up front, then own the app, the code and the member relationship outright.

How to budget sensibly

Start with the smallest version of the app your members would genuinely use, usually bookings, memberships and push notifications, and launch that. Add workout delivery, challenges and community once the core is earning its place on people's home screens. Scoping this way keeps the initial cost down and means every pound you spend afterwards is guided by how real members actually use the app.
